Pikmin 3 gameplay features three playable captains

Despite being announced as a launch title for the Wii U, Pikmin 3 has slowly slipped from the launch window as creator Shigeru Miyamoto continues to work on the game. In a recent interview with Rolling Stone magazine, Miyamoto stated that in order to allow players a more tactical approach to gaming, the third installment will feature three different playable captains:

“With Pikmin 3, you’ll have the ability to have three different captains or leaders of Pikmin groups and you can switch between them. So it sort of allows you to approach the game from a much more strategic position. The volume of work that you can get done within the timeframe has increased dramatically. And so that in and of itself really enhances the depth of strategy that’s available to you in that game.”

The addition of another captain beyond what was added in Pikmin 2 is an interesting one, but we currently have no information on whether or not the environments will be expanded to allow for this additional element.

The game is scheduled to be released in the spring of 2013.
