Miyamoto: “I think there needs to be a Nintendo genre”

miyamoto-wii-uWe all know it: Nintendo games aren’t like other games. There’s something about the games Nintendo publishes that makes them stand apart from the rest of the industry. It’s not just the visuals or the different franchises — there’s just something about Nintendo games that makes them special, something you can’t always put your finger on.

Legendary Nintendo game designer Shigeru Miyamoto believes this as well, of course. He thinks there should be a separate genre just for Nintendo games. Speaking to the LA Times Miyamoto said:

“Nintendo isn’t one simple element of an overall gaming industry. I really think there needs to be a Nintendo genre, that’s almost its own entity.”

While some hardcore gamers might dismiss Nintendo games as being “for kids”, most know that Nintendo’s games are just as popular with adults as with kids, especially titles such as Zelda. And while competitors are focusing on hyper-realistic — and often violent — games, Nintendo sticks with simple visuals and focuses on fun above all else.

Compared to all the games and developers who take themselves so seriously these days (we’re looking at you, Call of Duty and Battlefield), Miyamoto says Nintendo is very different, where they like to create “fun, odd and goofy things” and even make fun of themselves.
