Nintendo’s Shigeru Miyamoto doesn’t think that sheer console power is important. What matters, according to Shiggy, is innovation and a balance of power and cost. This comes as no surprise, given that Nintendo’s original Wii console was much less powerful than its counterparts, yet managed to outsell both of them, by a huge margin. Nintendo is looking to continue this strategy with the Wii U console.
In an interview with IGN, Miyamoto says that it’s possible that the next-gen consoles from Sony and Microsoft might be more powerful than the Wii U, saying “it’s not just about power alone, but how to balance what you’re offering in terms of power with cost”. Miyamoto added, “I’m very happy with the balance that we’ve been able to strike. What’s left is how developers use it”. Miyamoto said that it’s easy to get caught up on how powerful a console is and lose sight of whether a game is fun or not, which is a lot more important to him and Nintendo than power alone.
For what we’ve seen so far, Nintendo is taking the Wii U price very seriously. We previously reported that Nintendo won’t sell the Wii U at a loss, and the Wii U price has been widely speculated on over the past few months. We’ve heard numbers from $200 to $300, and Nintendo is likely to settle somewhere in the middle.
