Wii Virtual Console saves aren’t compatible with Wii U Virtual Console

Now that Nintendo has finally announced the Virtual Console for Wii U, lots of excitement has cropped up about the possibility of playing old classics on the Wii U GamePad. So far Nintendo has handled the port surprisingly well, offering affordable prices for people who have already purchased their favorites on the Wii. NES titles buyback starts at just a dollar with SNES buyback at a buck fifty. No prices have been given for N64 titles.

The only problem with the buyback program is that while you can transfer your games to the Wii U from the Wii in order to unlock the low pricing, you won’t be able to continue your saved games. That isn’t so bad for games like Super Mario where you can breeze through in a few minutes, but if you’re on your fifth playthrough of Chrono Trigger, you might want to finish it up before you decide to do the transfer.

Obviously people re-buy old games to experience them again for fun and nostalgia reasons so starting over for some people isn’t a huge deal breaker, but it is something to consider if you’ll be transferring your Wii Virtual Console titles over to your shiny new Wii U.
