Wii U software sales hit 32,000 in the UK in August

Pikmin 3 box artThe August sales numbers for the UK are out, and it’s looking bleak for the Wii U when it comes to software sales. While games sales have been up the last 4 months, the Wii U is still trailing its predecessor, the almost 7-year old Wii.

The Wii U sold 32,000 software units in the UK in August, compared to 30,000 in July and 24,000 in June. Which is a great sign that sales are rising, however, so far this year, games on the Wii have outsold the Wii U 3 to 1 in the UK.

Software sales for the Wii U are at 242,000 units in the UK so far this year, compared to over 5 million on the Xbox 360 consoles, and almost 4 million on the PlayStation 3 consoles.

Of course, there are certain things to be taken into consideration: the Wii, PS3, and Xbox 360 have been on the market for years and have a huge install base, while the Wii U has been on the market for less than a year.

And the good news is that Wii U software sales are rising in the UK, thanks to games such as Pikmin 3. Nintendo will be ramping up Wii U game releases this Fall, with Wii Party U, Wii Fit U, Super Mario 3D World. And of course, the recently released Zelda: The Wind Waker HD.

Nintendo really needs to build some momentum for the Wii U before the new consoles from Sony and Microsoft hit the market in November. And with the current lineup of games, they might just do that.
