Wii U sales almost doubled in the last quarter

Wii U consolesNintendo recently released their quarterly earnings, where they revealed that Wii U sales almost doubled in the last quarter compared to the previous one. Specifically, Nintendo sold 300,000 Wii U consoles in the last three months — 100,000 per month — while the previous quarter only saw 160,000 units sold.

Undoubtedly, games such as Pikmin 3 and Zelda: The Wind Waker HD accounted for the big sales increase. The recent Wii U price cuts also played a big role, according to Nintendo.

Total Wii U sales to date are at 3.9 million — a far cry from Nintendo’s estimate of selling 9 million by April 2014. Total Wii U software sales to date are just below 20 million (digital sales not included).

In the earnings report, Nintendo says the Wii U hardware “still has a negative impact on Nintendo’s profits. Overall, Nintendo lost $82 million last quarter, compared to a profit of $80 million during the same quarter last year.

It’s not all bad news, however, as the 3DS is continuing its solid sales run. Nintendo sold 2 million 3DS and 3DS XL consoles last quarter, reaching 35 million in total.

As for the Wii U, Nintendo hopes that Pikmin 3, Zelda Wind Waker HD, and the new bundles will push sales past the 5 million mark in the upcoming quarter (which includes the holiday shopping season).
