The Wii U launch will be much better than the Nintendo 3DS launch, with lots more games and content available. According to Nintendo UK’s David Yarnton, the company has learned from the mistakes it made with the portable 3DS, mistakes which will be corrected with the Wii U. The big problem with the 3DS was lack of content and lack of a functionality to download games. This will change with the Wii U later this year, which will launch with dozens of games and a full working Wii U eShop. Speaking to MCV, he said,
“One of the problems with 3DS was content. When we launched we didn’t have the content we do now, or the functionality for download games either”.
Yarnton continued, pointing out that the Wii U had 23 games showcased at E3 2012, plus other services like Amazon and Netflix, which will bring their streaming movie features to the Wii U. Yarnton also commented on the Wii U price, saying the company has a target price it will like to hit in order to get their investment back. This reiterates what Nintendo has been saying previously, that the Wii U will not be sold at a loss and that the company will make money on each console, much like it did with the Wii and GameCube. The way the market and the competition looks now, it’s highly unlikely we’ll see a Wii U price above $250.
So far, over 20 Wii U launch titles are expected to be released during the “launch window”, which according to Nintendo could be anywhere from 2 to 4 weeks after the console hits the store shelves.
