Wii U has best sales month ever in December 2014

Sales tracker NPD has revealed that Wii U sales saw a major increase in the last month of 2014, thanks to Super Smash Bros and some holiday sales offerings. In fact, December 2014 was the best sales month ever for Nintendo.

Hardware sales increased by almost 30 percent in December while software sales increased more than 75 percent, mainly thanks to Super Smash Bros and Bayonetta 2.

Nintendo also commented on the sales figures. While the company didn’t reveal exactly how many consoles were sold, they did reveal that Super Smash Bros sold 1.3 million copies on the Wii U. As we reported earlier today, Amiibo has been even more successful, selling twice as much as the game itself: over 2.6 million Amiibo figures were sold as of December 31, 2014.

Nintendo also revealed that Mario Kart 8 has sold 1.7 million units to date, which includes both retail and digital sales. Nintendo’s executive vice president of sales and marketing said in a statement that fans can “anticipate another strong year for 2015”.

In 2015, the biggest Wii U game by far is the new Zelda title. There still isn’t a firm release date, but most expect it to follow in the foot steps of Super Smash Bros and release towards the end of the year with all the other high-profile games.
