Nintendo: Wii U can “probably fend off PS4, Xbox 720”

Wii U playerThere has been much discussion about the Wii U vs the upcoming consoles from Sony and Microsoft, and how it will stack up against them. Nintendo is clearly targeting a core audience this time around, in addition to the casual market, and they believe this strategy will fend off the PlayStation 4 and the Xbox 720, according to Nintendo’s Reggie Fils-Aime.

Speaking to Seattle Times, Reggie touched up on a lot of aspects about the upcoming Wii U, and competition from the rival console makers came up. Asked whether the Wii U can fend off the PS4 and Xbox 720, Reggie said, “Once you talk about what that is, we can probably fend it off”.

Reggie also commented on the longevity of the Wii U, which he believes is based on graphics and a robust online system. He said:

“It’s based on having great graphics, it’s based on having a robust online execution. We believe that this system is going to have a very long life, and it’s going to be very well supported by third-party publishers.”

This might be the first time we’re hearing Nintendo admit that graphics do matter. While innovation and gameplay will always be what drives Nintendo forwards, we can’t escape the fact that a lot of players out there appreciate the technical aspects of a game, such as visuals and effects. We covered this subject extensively in the past, in our featured article “Wii U specs and performance matter, and Nintendo knows this“.

Last month, Reggie said that Nintendo was confident in the Wii U hardware and that the console specs would hold up for a very long time. It clear that the company sees the Wii U as a long-term console.
