Developer: the Wii U controller can’t be used as a gimmick

Developer NetherRealm is busy working on Injustice: Gods Among Us, a fighting game slated for release on the Wii U and other consoles in 2013. And they’re looking to use the new Wii U GamePad controller in innovative ways, instead of just presenting it as a gimmick.

“We’re going to have some conversation about the Wii U’s unique controller and how to use it in a fighting game that’s not just a gimmick” says NetherRealm’s Ed Boon to The Verge. He commented that the obvious thing would be to simply add the secret moves on the touchscreen where the player would just press them and fire off the moves. He notes that the new controller has to do more than that, and that they’re still working on how to implement the tablet controls. “It’s certainly not something that we’ve cracked yet”, he said. Injustice: Gods Among Us is a fighting game set in the DC Comics universe, made by the same people who did Mortal Kombat. For more on the game, check out some Injustice: Gods Among Us screenshots.

It’s great to hear that developers are taking the new tablet controller seriously, rather than just a gimmick where they can add the obvious buttons and features. The Wii had a big problem with cheap shovelware games that used the motion controls as a gimmick.
