Wii U Virtual Console games may be playable on 3DS

Wii U and 3DS

Long time rumor-monger Emily Rogers has speculated that, in the future, the Wii U and 3DS Virtual Consoles will be compatible.

What this means is that, commencing from a to-be-confirmed date, consumers who own both a Wii U and a 3DS will benefit by being able to play their Wii U or 3DS Virtual Console titles on either system.

Despite the enhanced freedom, there are several limitations. Rogers states that:

  1. Only some VC games will be compatible in this way.
  2. There will be a small fee to pay for transferring selected titles, not unlike the fee to play Wii VC games on your Wii U.
  3. VC games released on Wii U and not on 3DS (or vice versa) will not be compatible. Transferable titles will be only those  released on both platforms.

Some of these restrictions may seem upsetting at first, but it should be noted that Nintendo does not have to provide us this service. While some hardware developers do indeed make it easy to synchronize applications on multiple platforms, it can’t be denied that any compatibility between the Wii U and 3DS Virtual Consoles is better than no compatibility at all.

What are your thoughts on this supposed compatibility? Do you own both consoles, and are you likely to benefit from this service?
