Nintendo recently revealed that its Wii U and Nintendo 3DS consoles would be getting a unified account system via the Nintendo Network. However, a Nintendo of America spokesperson has now clarified on that statement. Charlie Scibetta, Director of Corporate Communications at Nintendo of America said that there is no official announcements regarding “a unified online account system between Wii U and Nintendo 3DS”.
Speaking to GamesIndustry, Scibetta only confirmed that they’ve announced the Nintendo Network as a “unified network platform” for the their systems, which include the 3Ds and the upcoming Wii U. He denied the existence of a unified account between the two consoles. He did add that more features of the new Nintendo Network will be revealed at a later date. Nintendo fans responded positively over the report of a unified account system — a single Nintendo Network account that could be used with both their 3Ds and the upcoming Wii U console. We’ll have to wait and see what Nintendo has in store for us on that front.
Over the past console generation, Nintendo has been lagging behind the competition when it comes to online services. The company is improving their online infrastructure and are looking to redeem themselves with the Wii U. The Nintendo Network includes online multiplayer, eShop, apps, and lots of other features. Nintendo is even considering a paid, premium Wii U online service with added features. However, the company made it clear recently that the basic Nintendo Network and online features will always be free.
