There is now some uncertainty over the Unreal Engine 4 Wii U support. We’ve previously reported that Epic and Nintendo were talking about bringing he engine to the console, where Nintendo was even rumored to have upped the specs of the Wii U so that it can run the Unreal Engine 4 technology. However, according to GameTrailer’s Geoff Keighley, who usually has some inside information about these things, Epic has only announced the Unreal Engine3 for the Wii U, not UE4. Keighley said via Twitter, “At GDC Mike Capps said Wii U will be Unreal Engine 3”, referring to the Game Developer’s Conference where Epic showed their Wii U support. At the same event, while Epic revealed UE3 for the Wii U, they showed off the UE3 to select developers behind closed doors.
While Keighley specifically denied UE4 for the Wii U at this point, Epic were quick to release a statement of their own. In a statement sent to CVG, the company said that the Unreal Engine 4 is so far only confirmed for PC and no other platforms have been announced. It’s safe to assume that the engine will definitely be coming to the next Xbox and PlayStation console, given how its predecessor was the dominant game engine on those platforms. However, we’re not discouraged by the lack of initial Unreal Engine 4 Wii U support — the engine has yet to be publicly revealed, and its likely that Epic will be embracing as many platforms as possible, Wii U included.
The Unreal Engine 4 has been in development for at least a few years now, and was initially shown behind closed doors to developers at GDC 2012.
