Ubisoft: Wii U is great, but needs to sell more units

Ubisoft has been one of the biggest Wii U supporters, if not the biggest. The company has released half a dozen games on the Wii U, and another half a dozen are on their way. Most recently, their upcoming and highly anticipated action title Watch Dogs was confirmed for the Wii U.

Ubisoft Wii UHowever, like most other publishers — including Nintendo — they’re not satisfied with the Wii U sales figures. When asked about the situation with the Wii U, Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot puts it frankly, saying “We think Wii U is a great machine. But it just has to sell more”. The slow sales might be a reason why Ubisoft recently took the Wii U exclusive Rayman Legends and made it into a multiplatform title. While this upset many Nintendo fans, Ubisoft can’t really be blamed: more platforms means a bigger chance of earning back what they invested into the game.

It’s easy to see why third party publishers want more Wii U sales: the more consoles there are out there, the bigger the audience, the bigger the chance of someone purchasing their games.

Nintendo has yet to kick in the marketing campaign for the Wii U. Besides promoting the console at launch, there has been virtually no Wii U advertising since then. As we pointed out last month, Nintendo really needs to step up its Wii U promotion, especially now since the new PlayStation 4 has been announced, and the next Xbox reveal is just around the corner.
