Kensuke Tanabe wants to make the West love Tingle

How do you feel about Tingle, from the Legend of Zelda series? He’s a much lauded character, getting his own game on the DS in Europe and Japan, but the general consensus here in the United States is that he’s one of the worst characters in the series. Kensuke Tanabe of Retro Studios recently joked that he’d love to turn that perception around.

“There’s no definitive plan or anything. It’s just me off the top of my head. I know how hated the character of Tingle is in the U.S. I know that people cannot stand Tingle. But to me that challenge is: Could I take this character that is so reviled in the West and just [do] a complete turnaround and make him a beloved, fun character?”

Tanabe goes on further to describe the process as something akin to romance, where two people meet and can’t stand each other, only to fall in love a bit later. That’s the process that Tanabe described as motivating his desires to create a Tingle game that even people in the United States would love.

How do you feel about Tingle? Tanabe’s comments are all purely hypothetical and nothing is in development, but would you play a game featuring Tingle if it were made for Wii U? Let us know in the comments below.
