The Zorpix Den: My Nintendo phone idea isn’t what you think [EDITORIAL]

nintendo-wii-smartphone-21

Hello all! And welcome to the first article in a little series I’m going to be calling “The Zorpix Den”. I’m going to be talking about something near and dear to my heart for each article, and then finishing off with discussing some of my Miiverse posts with you guys. Without any further ado, let’s get started!

The Nintendo DS Phone – Why I think it matters

Now, I’ve mentioned the idea of a DS Phone here a few times, once in our predictions article and a few times in the comments. Both times, people didn’t exactly seem too excited about the idea. I was told it was a stupid idea and that Nintendo would never work with smartphones like that. People also said Nintendo would never make mobile games. Given the recent news about Nintendo dabbling in the smartphone field, I decided to bring this up again and clarify a few things.

Firstly, I called my little idea “NintendOS”, but that was a bit misleading. I’m not really proposing a new operating system for existing smartphones. While that is an exciting prospect, I don’t find it very probable that Nintendo would be developing such an operating system. I also don’t think they’d make something for someone else’s device. If they were going to make some kind of OS, it’d be for official Nintendo hardware.

I agree that making smartphone games wouldn’t be Nintendo’s style. They tend to think on a much bigger scale, and I don’t think they’d like the limitations placed on smartphone developments. Sure, they are developing an app. Sure, the dev team was given no limits. But do you think the Super Mario 3D World team would’ve been happy with mobile phone limitations? I think not.

This brings me to my next point of what I think such a device would be. I think it will come in the form of the DS Phone, or the Phone DS. Maybe even the PDS! DSP? …Anyone? Alright, now we’re getting too close to Sony’s name. Let’s move on.

Now, when I say “DS Phone”, I don’t mean a phone that plays DS games. I think that was another misconception that people had about my idea. I mean a DS that makes phone calls. Just a normal 3DS, same power, same capabilities, same everything. The only difference is that this DS has a slot for a SIM card. For those of you who don’t know, the SIM card is the thing in most cellular devices that sends and receives calls, texts, and data. So basically, what I want is a 3DS that doesn’t sacrifice power or features, but adds a calling/texting app that can be pulled up while a game is suspended. It could also use your data plan instead of wifi when applicable. I’m pretty sure the Vita is able to use data, so why not the 3DS?

The main downside that comes to mind is losing DS backwards compatibility. If you’ve ever put a regular DS game into your 3DS, you’ll know that pressing the home button makes you have to close the game to get to the menu. Unless a workaround is developed for that, I don’t know if backwards compatibility would be possible. On the other hand, if no background software was allowed to run behind these games and they were allowed, you could be missing important calls and texts that happen to occur while you’re playing.

What do you guys think? Does my idea make a little more sense now, or is it still completely crazy? Let me know what a nut I am below!

Miiverse and Zorpix

So, this recurring part of “The Zorpix Den” is just going to be a few of my Miiverse posts where I expand a bit on what went down, and get to discuss the games I’ve been playing with you guys!

Post text: EPIC SOAP OF FROOOOOOTH!!!!

Game: Skylanders: Swap Force

Epic Soap of Froth!!

Found this after completing a Swap Zone challenge. I think this is one of the best names for an item I’ve seen in a game. It even has a picture of Kaos (the game’s main villian) right there on the soap. However, that would make me a little more tentative to use it… But hey, +4% critical hit is nothing to shake a Skylander at. Just call me a Soaplander!

Post text: Don’t worry buddy. I’ll get you to safety!

Game: Splinter Cell: Blacklist

Splinter Cell puppy

So, apparently in Splinter Cell: Blacklist, dogs can alert nearby baddies of your presence. This little guy was barking at me and just wouldn’t stop, so I sadly had to put him down. He made a sad little whimpering noise when I killed him, and made me feel horrible. So I decided to pick him up and make it look like I was bringing him to safety! It’s weird though, because I can take out enemy humans and not feel a thing, but as soon as I take out a puppy, I feel like an awful person. Does anybody else feel the same way when killing an animal as opposed to a human in game?

Post Text: She’s right… It is kinda scary…

Game: Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney – Dual Destinies

Cant remember this guy's name

I had to talk to this guy in Ace Attorney a while back. What a smile! Those teeth are so perfect, it’s like the “ok” sign he’s giving is reference to his teeth! This is my first Ace Attorney game, and I absolutely love it. If you’re a fan of anime/manga and story based games where you have to solve crimes in an actual courtroom, you should do the following:

  1. Stop reading this article. Seriously, just stop it.
  2. Pick up your 3DS. It’s probably close by.
  3. Go to the eshop. If you don’t know what that is, send Reggie an email.
  4. Download Ace Attorney. It is 30 bucks.
  5. Play the game in its entirety.
  6. Purchase and download the DLC.
  7. Walk into an actual courtroom and just start declaring everyone guilty. Sooner or later, you’ll be right.

Wrapping up

Well, that’s it everyone! Thank you very much for reading this article, and I hope you enjoyed it. If you have any suggestions for next week’s topic, any questions about the content I wrote, or just wanna say hey, feel free to sound off below! If you really feel inclined, you can mosey on over to my Twitter, Facebook, or Miiverse account. Please don’t feel offended if I don’t respond to friend requests on the Wii U, as I reserve that for people I actually know in real life. I’ll gladly follow back though!

Thank you for reading, and have a happy Valentine’s Day!
