The GameCube adapter is only compatible with Smash on Wii U

Yesterday Eurogamer published a rumor that the Wii U GameCube adapter would be compatible with other software titles like Mario Kart 8 and Pikmin 3. Today, Nintendo UK reached out to the site to clarify that this statement is false, and the new adapter for the Wii U will only be compatible with Super Smash Bros. on Wii U.

The question of whether or not the adapter would be compatible with other software was risen when official materials from Nintendo stated that the adapter would be compatible with the same games that support the Wii Classic controller and the Wii U Pro controller.

“The GameCube Controller Adapter for Wii U is compatible with Wii U and Super Smash Bros. for Wii U specifically – it is not compatible with any other Wii U software. The adapter is also not compatible with Wii and we apologise for any confusion.”

It’s obvious Nintendo’s marketing materials made a mistake here, but does this affect your decision to either buy the adapter separately, or purchase the $99 Smash bundle that includes the controller and adapter? Many people are perfectly happy just using the GameCube controller for Super Smash Bros., but others were looking forward to a more classic GameCube controller experience for Nintendo’s other games.
