Leak reveals save data transfer and guest login coming to Switch

If there’s one thing Nintendo Switch owners have been begging for since the console launch last March, it’s the ability to backup and transfer game saves. Launching without said feature means that if your console were to mess up, or get stolen, all that time spent playing Breath of the Wild or something else would be for nothing. However, a leak this evening reveals that this feature is coming sometime in the future.

A 4chan user leaked the Nintendo Switch’s SDK, essentially files that allow developers to make their games for any given console. After confirmation from some developers that the information found in the files was indeed real, we got really excited. Why? Because save data trasnfer and guest logins were in the leak.

Save data transfer would allow you to transfer your account save data to different consoles. Here’s Nintendo’s exact wording:

In the future, we plan to provide a feature to transfer account save data among multiple consoles. As a result, there is the possibility that user accounts with uninitialized account save data will be added. Note that your design must work without issue, even in this case.

Guest logins are arguably more interesting. You know how frustrating it can be going to a friend’s house without your exact stats on hand? Well, logging into a guest account and then logging into your Nintendo Account would allow you to bring your online data with you to a foreign Switch. Nintendo’s wording:

We are considering a feature in the future (tentative name: Guest Login) to access existing network service account information without linking to a user account. This feature would allow temporary access to the network service account linked to the Nintendo Account by logging in to the Nintendo Account within the application. This feature would, for example, make it possible to upload a character you have raised as online data and then use that data on a friend’s NX (without creating a user account).

We do not plan to provide this feature for the NX launch.

With the “NX” name being tossed around in the document, we can only assume that the SDK is relatively old. That asid, the info in the doc also talks about features that we’ve just received such as the News Channel that allows you to subscribe to your favorite games in the News section.

When the above feature will be available (or if, in the case of the Guest Login) is anyone’s guess. Hopefully we get them soon, so we can stop worrying about our save data.
