In today’s Nintendo Direct, series producer Masahiro Sakurai announced that online modes for Super Smash Bros. will offer two different modes of play for casual and hardcore players. These modes are called “For Fun” and “For Glory” and each mode has a specific rule set that most competitive players have adopted in order to focus battles on skill, instead of random luck with items.

For Fun is the typical Smash Bros. experience, with random stages and items making an appearance. When playing online in this mode, only your wins will be recorded on your profile. For Glory is much more serious in that it is designed to appeal to long time fans of the series, as well as tournament players. No items are available and the only stage is Final Destination, though each of the new stages have been modified to have a Final Destination version that can be used in this mode. Wins and losses while playing For Glory will be recorded on the player’s profile.

With the Final Destination variants, hardcore players can experience the wonder of the new Super Smash Bros. levels while still maintaining their strict ruleset.

Aside from these changes, Nintendo also announced that it plans to heavily moderate the online community for the game, making sure that everyone has a fun time. Players will be able to report other players for cheating, abusing glitches, harrassment, and other bad behavior. These reports could result in a temporary ban on the Nintendo Network ID from playing in online modes. Of course, people will want to be careful with false reports as well, as Nintendo has stated that it will be taking action against accounts that report false offenses too often.

Super Smash Bros. will be launching this summer for Nintendo 3DS, while the Wii U version will be launching this winter.
