Super Mario Bros. has been voted the 6th worst film of all time, based on a recent survey conducted by Rifftrax. The article, titled Worst Movies of All Time, includes the top 25 worst motion pictures as voted by 500,000 readers.
The film received a total of 17,755 votes, not far off Last Airbender, which came in 5th with 18,086 votes. Surprised? So were we, but only because Super Mario Bros. didn’t come in 1st! Granted, with films like Batman and Robin eager to compete, it’s always bound to be a close call.
Rifftrax put it simply with their humorous, albeit accurate summary of the film.
This adaptation took the bright, colorful world of the Mushroom Kingdom and turned it into a post-apocalyptic wasteland coated in fungal goop. Throw in performances from Dennis Hopper and John Leguizamo, and you had legions of young Nintendo fans saying, “Mommy, I think I want a Sega Genesis now.”
Super Mario Bros. scored a 3.8 on IMDB. It should count itself fortunate with a score like that. The film has been a scar on all things Mario ever since its inception.
