On this day 30 years ago, Nintendo released Super Mario Bros in Japan. On September 13th, 1985, the world got its first glimpse of Super Mario Bros, a game that spawned the most popular gaming franchise in history.

Super Mario Bros, alongside its other Mario games, have sold over 500 million units worldwide, that’s half a billion games. The Super Mario series itself has sold nearly 300 million units.

Mario originally appeared in a small dole in Donkey Kong in 1981, but it took another four years before the Italian plumber got his own game with Super Mario Bros on the Famicom in Japan in 1985.

Super Mario Bros came out later in 1985 in North America, but it took another two years for the game to come out in Europe.

Super Mario was created by Nintendo legend Shigeru Miyamoto, who recently said that they want to take the series into a different direction.
