New details about SteamWorld Dig 2 surface from Reddit AMA

Image & Form did an Ask Me Anything style interview on the r/NintendoSwitch subreddit, revealing a lot of juicy information about the upcoming SteamWorld Dig 2 and what development is like on the Nintendo Switch. It’s been interesting hearing different perspectives from different developers, as Shovel Knight’s creators have already weighed in on the issue. Here’s what the Image & Form team said about the ease of Switch development.

Switch is incredibly easy to develop for. Lightyears ahead Wii U and 3DS. The dev environment is great even when compared to PS4, Steam and Xbox. PC will always be the easiest but I’d say Switch is definitely up there.

The team was also asked how much bigger the world of SteamWorld Dig 2 will be compared to the original. If you’ll recall from our report yesterday, the game no longer uses procedural generation to make the levels and instead, progression will be handled in a very Metroidvania style way.

It’s going to be A LOT BIGGER. Think Super Metroid big with multiple worlds, lots of upgrades, a plethora of monsters and more traps and challenges than ever before. Sorry for the PR speak, I’m just really excited to finally get to talk about the game 😀

When asked about the release date, the team confirmed they couldn’t reveal anything today, but that they would closer to E3. For those looking forward to a possible physical release of SteamWorld Dig 2, there’s no word yet but that doesn’t mean it won’t happen. It seems like the SteamWorld Collection sold really well, so it’s a definite possibility.

No word on a physical release yet. We’re in the talks with distributors, but have nothing to announce at this moment. BUT SteamWorld Collection did REALLY well for us, so physical makes a lot of sense. I would also want to be able to taste our very own Switch cartridge.

The team was also asked about battery drain and they confirmed the current build of the game gets about 4 hours of gameplay before the Nintendo Switch needs to be recharged. A Rusty amiibo was also brought up, but the team confirmed there’s nothing in the works just yet. You can see more of the questions and the team’s answers on the official reddit AMA post.
