Earlier this week during the Nintendo Direct, it was revealed that Splatoon will also have a single-player focused portion of the game. Previously we assumed the game would be entirely multiplayer, as when the game was revealed at E3 that’s the only portion that was shown off. The official Splatoon Japanese Twitter account has given some hints as to the plot for the single player game in one of its tweets, which has been translated below:

Investigative Report from the Squid Research Lab. The protagonist, wearing the Hero Suit, travels through this underground world. The Octopus Army Corps, hoping to invade the Squid’s world, built this underground facility. Is it just me that feels the Octopus’ longing for the world above-ground from the blue sky projected onto those large monitors?

So it looks like it’ll be squids against octopuses for the single player portion of the game, which will likely be a good tutorial for all the abilities in the game before you join multiplayer. Many people were already excited about Splatoon as it’s the first shooter from Nintendo in a while. Does the single player mode make you more excited?
