Splatoon 2 multiplayer will lock you out if you disconnect too many times

Nintendo doesn’t do things by the book when it comes to online play. The latest example is Splatoon 2’s multiplayer. Not only do you need a cumbersome setup to use the voice chat (via your smartphone), you also need a good connection.

Because if you don’t have a good connection and repeatedly disconnect from games, Splatoon 2 will temporarily ban you from online play. That’s right, the game won’t let you play at all.

It doesn’t specify for how long you’ll be offline — it simply says “we’re gonna have to block you from playing online for a while” if the player doesn’t end the game “naturally”.

It could also deter people from leaving games and serve as an incentive not to quit just because you’re losing. But for players with unstable connections, it might be unfair to block them entirely, especially since the Switch uses WiFi-only.
