The winner of this console generation is undoubtedly Sony, whose PS4 has sold twice as many units as the second best console. And while the Nintendo Switch started way later this generation, it’s off to an impressive start.
And Sony has of course noticed that. Sony boss Shawn Layden told Time that the Switch is a “great success” and is what the Nintendo fan base has been waiting for.
However, he doesn’t see the Switch as a direct competitor to the PS4, but more of a “companion”.
“When you look at our numbers, I think it shows that a lot of gamers are a two-console family. And quite often those two consoles are PlayStation and Nintendo sitting side-by-side” said Layden.
Which is true in a sense — Nintendo never intended to directly compete on specs with the Switch, and made a hybrid console instead of a dedicated home console like the PS4 and Xbox One.
