Sony is working on an animated Mario movie

A recent hack of Sony Pictures has completely ground the studio to a halt, preventing work from being done while simultaneously leaking thousands of emails that contain sensitive information relating to the day-to-day operations of several films the studio was working on. Most notably, several actors have had their pseudonyms revealed, more than 47,000 social security numbers have been leaked and many believe the likely culprit is North Korea because of The Interview movie and its related plot.

Either way, one interesting tid-bit of information comes from the leaked emails the hackers have released onto the internet. One of the contained a subject line of “Mario” and this is what it said:

“I am the proud father of mario the animated film [sic],” producer Avi Arad told Sony studio chief Amy Pascal in an email dated Oct. 23, 2014, with the subject line “Mario.” Arad then forwarded Pascal separate images of him with Mario Bros.creator Shigeru Miyamoto and Nintendo CEO Satoru Iwata, the latter of which included the message, “Happy ceo, lets get together, it’s the mother load. [sic]

While this is very obviously in the early stages of being put together, it’s possible that it could continue on despite the hack. We’ve seen a revived interest in video game characters, especially with the release of Wreck-It Ralph and the upcoming Wreck-It Ralph 2. Nintendo wouldn’t license Mario for that movie, perhaps because they’re planning on making their own movie with Sony.
