Sonic Boom or Sonic Bust?

Sonic Boom 6

Sonic. You might have boomed a bit too much

Alright, so we’ve all seen this by now, right? This is what Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, and Amy are all going to look like from now on. Or at least until the new series is over. If you haven’t heard, Sega is rebranding the Sonic the Hedgehog series in a TV show and a Nintendo exclusive game, both called Sonic Boom. This article will mainly focus on my reaction after seeing the trailer to both.

The Show

Just so you know what I’m talking about, watch the trailer for the show below, then continue reading.

Ouch. Sonic, what did you let them do to you? Not only do you seem to move about as fast as a Denver Bronco, but you look ridiculous when you do so. My main complaint here is that sonic is moving way too slow and way too awkwardly. Although I must admit, after watching it a fourth or fifth time, his movements do look a little better than I had first thought. I just find it weird that when his legs move, NONE of his upper body moves with them. Usually his chest bobs up and down a little as you would expect, but it stays perfectly level the whole time.

Also, his voice is just… weird. I understand that it’s still Roger Craig Smith doing his voice, which should’ve been great. I loved him as Sonic. However, this new take on the character is quite a bit more childish. It takes out the sarcastic teenager sounding voice, and leaves us with a voice that lost all its sass and attitude. As for the rest of the characters in the trailer, they all sound perfect. Eggman especially. I could listen to that man speak for years.

As for the script, I have mixed feelings. The writing is understandably aimed at children, so I won’t be really taking off points for that. This is also more of a teaser trailer it seems, so the amount of missing context is also excusable. I found the bit about the robot’s name particularly amusing. I’ve had a certain complaint with ever Sonic show so far, and this one is no exception. TAILS CAN FLY, WHY DONT YOU LET HIM? HE’S A FREE SPIRIT! A FREE EIGHT YEAR OLD SPIRIT! LET HIM FLY! There’s a lot of rage in that statement. Let me explain.

Sonic-Tails-Flying

We all know Tails isn’t actually dead. I mean come on, he’s a secondary character. They’re not going to kill him off. So we don’t technically know if he flew away or not, but I’ll bet my Skylanders collection he didn’t. He could’ve easily just undone his seat belt,  jumped out of the plane, and flown away. Crisis averted. Tails saved. I’m a hero.

Also, why are they using power gloves? Is this part of the Nintendo deal?

The Game

Again, here is the trailer for the game. Watch it if you haven’t, then continue.

Now, this game seems to be going for a different audience than the TV show. Good. I absolutely love this trailer. Many are gonna hate me for this, but the song choice was excellent. It showed that this is a game that can appeal to an older generation (older than children, anyhow) that grew up with Sonic. I absolutely love that they have Sonic running on water and Tails shooting lasers. This is all I have ever wanted from a Sonic game. Sign me up. Sonic Boom will be coming to my Wii U.

Forget the redesigns, forget the show, forget everything. This trailer does it for me. I’m okay with this rebranding of my childhood hero. It seems like he’s grown up with me. True, we didn’t get much story or gameplay, but the art style, the huge open environments, and the lasers make me forget that instantly. I honestly don’t know what it is about this trailer that makes me okay with everything about this redesign, but it does. I know it’s not the same for everyone, but it just feels good to me.

Not to mention they’re actually running FAST. It annoys me a bit that Tails is running faster than sonic, but I can handle that. It also looks like this game supports four player co-op, which explains why the characters have to run at about the same speed. I tend to host “Wii U Parties” often, and I’m hoping to add this game to the mix.

My last praise is that they seem to be using the uniqueness of each character well. Knuckles for climbing around stuff, Amy for her hammer, Tails with his tech, and Sonic with his speed.

All in all, I can’t wait to learn more about this game, and I can’t help being a bit proud that it’s a Nintendo exclusive.

Miiverse and Zorpix

It’s that time again! Let’s get to it!

Super Mario 3D World

it came from the sea

RUUUUN!!! IT’S GOOMZILLA. Or something… Either way, fighting that thing was pretty daunting. I suppose it helped that I had a little extra power thanks to my kitty suit, but only having 100 seconds for the level was what really made my fur stand on end!

Skylanders: Swap Force

too many toys

So apparently, if you put too many magic items on the portal, it says you have too many toys. Nobody told me I couldn’t have a platinum bouncing sheep jukebox that spit out diamonds! If I had known that, I would’ve played Disney Infinity. Also, I think the game itself telling me I have too many toys is a bit of a wake up call. That is Activision literally saying to me: “Hey, stop buying stuff”. I will give you my money and you will like it, Activision.

Lego City: Undercover

stole a car and a girl

I couldn’t help it. The car, she was so pretty. And the girl, she was so pretty. I needed the pretty. Despite the fact that I’m in a pimp daddy suit, she seems to be warming up to me. Well… as warm as mini-figures get anyways! By the way, anyone who has ever dismissed this game because it’s too “childish” really needs an ego check. This game is fantastic, and offers one of the best experiences on the Wii U. If the previous Lego games scared you off, don’t worry. They scared me too. But this game is on another level.

If you really feel inclined, you can mosey on over to my Twitter, Facebook, or Miiverse account. Please don’t feel offended if I don’t respond to friend requests on the Wii U, as I reserve that for people I actually know in real life. I’ll gladly follow back though!

Thank you for reading, and have a happy Valentine’s Day this weekend! Play some Wii U with your Valentine!
