Sonic Boom game coming exclusively to Wii U/3DS [VIDEO]

Last year Sega announced a new Sonic cartoon, called Sonic Boom, and earlier today in the wake of a new promotional image released by Sega and some rumors last week we speculated that we’d be hearing some Sonic news soon. Well, we were right, and it happened sooner than we thought, as Sega America recently released a trailer for the upcoming Sonic Boom cartoon series, which is set to debut on Cartoon Network this fall. While Sega Europe has released the trailer shown above for the tie-in Sonic Boom video game.

The game is exclusively coming to the Wii U and 3DS as the third title in Sega’s deal with Nintendo, and will serve as a prequel to the TV series. Together the game and cartoon will be what Sega refers to as “a new branch of the Sonic universe.” So possibly a reboot, which according to Sega will consist of a CG animated television series, new video games for Wii U and Nintendo 3DS, and a brand new toy line.

One of the most prominent things about this new series, which has been discussed since the characters’ silhouettes were shown in an announcement last year, are their new character models, which are in many ways quite different than their older ones. Of course this wouldn’t be the first time Sonic and his friends have gone through a major redesign.

Tails new design more closely reflects his role as team mechanic and pilot as he now wears goggles and and a tool pouch. Knuckles is now apparently on steroids. He now towers over the other characters, and his upper body actually looks thick and muscular compared to his old pencil thin design. Sonic now sports some kind of brown neckerchief and a slightly different hairstyle. Also his arms are blue now, they used to be the same flesh-tone color as his chest and muzzle.

Another noteworthy style change is that Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles all wear arm and foot wraps and their shoes and gloves look more worn than before. Amy has ditched her old dress and her new design looks more mature as she undresses Sonic with her eyes.

The game will feature both speed and exploration and will make use of a new “Enerbeam tether mechanic,” which will allow the player to interact with the world in unique ways. From the video and screenshots it appears to draw elements from both Sonic Heroes and Sonic Adventure, with the characters shown running together as a team, but also acting individually with unique skills and gameplay.
