Nintendo will make more SNES Classic consoles after NES Classic demand

The NES Classic was one of the hottest items to get during the holiday 2016 season, so much so that many gamers who wanted to pick up one of the retro tributes were unable to do so thanks to high demand. Even now, these consoles are selling for massive amounts on eBay thanks to the poor supply chain Nintendo had going for the NES Classic.

After the announcement of the console and its exclusive games earlier today, Kotaku reached out to ask Nintendo whether or not they’ll have more supply of the SNES Classic compared to the NES Classic. While Nintendo refused to give numbers, the rep did confirm that Nintendo plans on producing more SNES Classic units, at least for this year.

We aren’t providing specific numbers, but we will produce significantly more units of Super NES Classic Edition than we did of NES Classic Edition.

Super Nintendo Entertainment System: Super NES Classic Edition is currently planned to ship from Sept. 29 until the end of calendar year 2017. At this time, we have nothing to announce regarding any possible shipments beyond this year.

While that’s great news for fans of the SNES, what’s concerning about that statement is that production seems like it will only be for this year. So this is your pre-warning that if you want one of these consoles, you should get it when they’re available because it sounds like Nintendo will discontinue production pretty soon after the end of the year, similarly to what happened with the NES Classic.
