Bethesda can’t say which version of Skyrim the Switch is getting

In a rather baffling move this week, Bethesda’s Todd Howard puzzled Nintendo Switch and The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim (Skyrim) fans by saying that Bethesda “can’t say” which version of Skyrim the Switch will be getting this fall: the remaster from last year or the original game from 2011.

Of course, we all assumed that the Switch would be getting the remaster. It already doesn’t make much sense to release the game a year after its launch on PS4, Xbox One, and PC, but giving people the original game over the remaster? That would make even less sense.

The only reason we can think of for Howard to provide such a non-answer is because Skyrim on the Switch might be between the original and the remaster. For all we know, the Switch might not be capable of running Skyrim with all the improvements Bethesda made in last year’s remaster, so some compromises might need to be made. This would naturally mean that what the Switch gets would be better than the original, but lack some of the features found in the remaster.

Would it be disappointing? Sure, mod support on the go and just a more beautiful Skyrim would be amazing. However, Skyrim on the go period is something we wouldn’t really want to pass up, remastered or not.
