Rosalina announced as character for Super Smash Bros. 3DS and Wii U

Earlier in today’s Nintendo Direct, Nintendo announced the latest character for the upcoming Super Smash Bros. games. This time it’s fan favorites Rosalina and Luma from Super Mario Galaxy; who already have their own page on the Official Super Smash Bros. website.

Her moveset appears to take inspirations from both Olimar and the Ice Climbers. Much like Olimar plucks Pikmin, she summons Lumas to enhance her attacks. The Lumas are then semi-autonomous but follow Rosalina’s movements like Nana of the Ice Climbers follows Popo. They also, like Pikmin can be destroyed by other character’s attacks and can even be used to guard Rosalina and take hits for her. Three different colors of Luma have been shown with her thus far: yellow, red and green; it’s unknown how or if the Luma’s colors fit into gameplay.

Most of her non-Luma based attacks seem to revolve around her magical powers, with her physical attacks and jump being highlighted with a sparkly after effect. She also seems to pick up characters and items with magic, as in one point in the trailer she appears to be carrying a cowering Luigi without physically touching him, and in another she picks up and flings Fox by simply flicking her wand. She’s also shown attracting several items to her at one point in the trailer before grabbing a shell and tossing it at Marth. She’s even shown redirecting Mario’s FLUDD’s water spray.

This isn’t her first outing as a playable character this year, as she was available an unlockable secret fifth character in Super Mario 3D World. In that game she has a unique spin attack, like the one from the Super Mario Galaxy games, and her characteristics include being able to jump as high as Luigi but at the same time being slower than the other characters. It’s unknown at this time how or if her Super Mario 3D World incarnation will influence her Super Smash Bros. one.
