Pokemon Go players catch a whopping 500 million Pokemon in two days

Last weekend Pokemon Go developer Niantic posed a challenge to its players: collect 3 billion Pokemon and unlock new prizes. And players have started off very well: they’ve collected over half a billion Pokemon in less than 48 hours.

The 500 million mark means that new awards have been unlocked (such as double XP), and more are coming as players catch more and more Pokemon.

Players are attracted to the challenge for one big reason: if the milestone is reached, region-locked Pokemon will be made available, such as Kangaskhan, which is right now restricted to Oceania.

Pokemon Go players have until November 26 to reach the 3 billion mark, and they’re off to a good start.
