The annual Game Developers Conference will kick off in a few weeks, and while it will attract thousands of video game developers from around the world, only few will develop games for the Wii U.
That’s according to a poll done by the GDC, where they asked their attendees what systems they will develop for this year. Only 4% of developers had Wii U on their list of platforms they will be working on in 2014. The poll included 2,600 game developers from North America. The “winner” among home consoles was the PlayStation 4, where 20% said they would work on the console.
Of course, this isn’t a scientific poll by any means, and it doesn’t mean that of all the developers in the world, only 4% will work on the Wii U. But it does reveal a harsh reality for the Wii U: third parties are still not on board.
The poll results show the sad state of third party support for the Wii U. So far all of Wii U’s sales momentum has been driven by Nintendo’s own first party titles. The poll also shows some bad news for the 3DS, as only 2% said they would work on the 3DS, while a whopping 50% said they would work on smartphone devices.
Regardless of how many intend to develop for the Wii U, Nintendo is expected to be present at GDC and show off some new Wii U and 3DS development tools, just like they did last year.
