Nyko used to make awesome accessories, what happened?

Ask any gamer who their favorite third-party gaming peripheral manufacturer is and you’ll probably here some variation of Nyko or HORI. Mad Catz is going the way of the Dodo, which means the space for console accessories is getting that much smaller. What’s even more unfortunate is that Nyko seems to be making several missteps with their products, especially those aimed at Nintendo Switch owners.

I got an email today from Nyko’s PR letting me know that a new power adapter for the Nintendo Switch is available. Cool, I thought as I clicked the email to check out the specs. So Nyko is charging $16 for this thing on Amazon and it’s only capable of putting out 2.4 amps of power. That’s barely enough to charge the Nintendo Switch and it’s certainly not enough to power the Switch dock.

The original Switch charger that comes with the console powers the console at 3 amps and is a USB-C to USB-C cable. Since this accessory from Nyko is a USB-C to USB-A charger, you’re not getting the best charging performance. In fact, you’d do better to buy a third-party cable like this RAVPower USB-C cable and using it with a USB-C brick from a smartphone.

What happened, Nyko? This is a very poor substitute that no one in their right mind should buy, since it will take you many hours to charge your device with it. You’re better off buying another official charger from Nintendo, or a charging kit meant for USB-C smartphones than this piece of junk. The Amazon link below is a highly rated third-party charger that doesn’t suck. Check it out if you’re looking for an additional charger and you were considering this Nyko charger. Don’t waste your money.
