Nintendo was brainstorming about Switch when Wii U launched in 2012

According to Nintendo’s Shinya Takahashi, the company already started thinking about the Switch after the Wii U was released back in 2012.

He said that by the end of 2014, they had two concepts that they wanted to explore with the Switch: detachable controllers (Joy-Cons) and a home/portable hybrid console.

The end result: the Nintendo Switch.

Nintendo’s Yoshiaki Koizumi chimed in, saying that the company saw the games business being split between hardcore home console gaming and casual mobile gaming. They then set out to combine the two with the Switch console.

But this revelation also begs the question: is Nintendo now thinking about their next console?

Or perhaps they just weren’t confident in the Wii U so they immediately went to work on the next console.
