Nintendo wants to ship 10 million Switch consoles to attract publishers

During Nintendo’s recent quarterly earnings, the company reported great Switch sales numbers: the console has sold 2.7 million units during its first month, making it one of the fastest selling Nintendo console ever.

And they expect to sell 10 million in the current fiscal year. And that’s an important number, as the company revealed today.

In an investor brief, Nintendo said that selling 10 million Switch consoles this year will show third party publishers that it’s a viable platform.

“Shipping 10 million hardware units this fiscal year, as planned, will give publishers and the rest of our business partners a sense that the future of the Nintendo Switch is more promising”, the statement read.

If Nintendo manages to sell 10 million units this fiscal year (ending March 31, 2018), it would surpass the lifetime sales of the Wii U in a single year, basically.

And so far it’s looking very promising: Switch stock is selling out as soon as it arrives, and Nintendo has a great games lineup: Zelda Breath of the Wild, Mario kart 8, and Splatoon 2 is just around the corner.

They added:

“We want to raise the installed based of Nintendo Switch up to the same level as Wii. Nintendo Switch in America had the fastest start of any Nintendo hardware, despite launching in March.”

“In the video game business, it’s important for consumers to feel that a sales momentum is going to grow, and we are setting the standard with Nintendo Switch to release a continuous string of major software titles from now on.”
