Nintendo’s end of quarter financials were revealed today, and despite a strong performance from Mario Kart 8 over the month of June, Nintendo still posted a net loss of $97 million. Revenue for the first fiscal quarter of 2015 totaled $729 million, but that number is still down 8.4% compared to the previous year.
Mario Kart 8 shifted 2.82 million copies worldwide in the month of June, achieving blockbuster status for the company. Despite the huge number of sales for the game, Nintendo did not see a large shift in consoles sold thanks to the Mario Kart 8 bundle. During the quarter only 500k Wii U units were moved from April through June.
Current console numbers put Nintendo at selling 6.68 million consoles to date, putting it directly behind PlayStation’s 7 million sold.
In a recent interview with Bloomberg, an analyst admitted that it is difficult for Nintendo to grow steadily without releasing the same number of games in the same time period as last year, despite the success of Mario Kart 8. The recently detailed Amiibo figurine project will help achieve the desired operating income for the company, making the Amiibo launch one of the most important launches in history for the company.
