Nintendo rep: Wii U is “19 times more powerful than PS3”

Wii U powerHere’s an odd statement from Nintendo, if it came from Nintendo at all. According to a Wii U preview article, a Nintendo rep told the site Total Revue that the Wii U is “19 times more powerful than the PlayStation 3”. We’re pretty sure the site is pulling this quote out of their a** for a few reasons.

Firstly, Nintendo never comments on the performance figures of the Wii U. It’s unlikely that a Nintendo rep at a show floor would know anything about its specs, let alone compare to current consoles. Secondly, while the Wii U is more powerful than the PS3 and Xbox 360, it most certainly isn’t 19 times more powerful than those consoles. The upcoming PS4 and Xbox 720 won’t be that powerful.

Developers have consistently said that Wii U is around 50% more powerful than current generation consoles. Nintendo has only confirmed one aspect of the Wii U Specs: that the console packs 2 GB of RAM, 1 GB to the OS and 1 GB to games. Which means it has twice the game memory of current generation console hardware. The specifics details about the CPU and GPU are yet to be unveiled, but we know that it’s a 3-core CPU and a modern AMD GPU design. And that’s about it.
