Nintendo officially lowers Wii U sales forecast

Nintendo wii u logoNintendo had a somewhat unrealistic sales forecast for the Wii U: they estimated the console would sell 6.8 million units in fiscal year 2014 alone. As everyone expected, they have now revised their sales forecast to better reflect reality.

Nintendo now expects to sell 4.3 million units in fiscal year 2013, which ends on March 31, 2014. As of December 2013, the Wii U has sold a total of 4.3 million consoles in total (including both 2012 and 2013 fiscal years).

While it was clear that the Wii U would not reach Nintendo’s target sales, the console has been doing a lot better lately, thanks to high-profile games from Nintendo.

Ever sine the release of Pikmin 3 back in August, sales have steadily increased. Nintendo also released Wind Waker HD and Super Mario 3D World in the Fall and Winter, which help sustain the sales increase.

While Nintendo hasn’t been doing well when it comes to marketing the Wii U, they have done a great job at launching great games with a few months in between.

In 2014, Nintendo expects to release Mario Kart 8 in the Spring, which will hopefully sustain the current Wii U sales level. Later in 2014, Wii U owners can look forward to games such as Bayonetta 2, Super Smash Bros U, Yarn Yoshi, and more.
