Nintendo NX controller possibly revealed in new patent application

Everyone is really excited about the upcoming Nintendo NX console, and each time we get some more information, it only adds to the excitement. Now we can take it up a notch as a new patent application from Nintendo reveals the possible NX controller.

The patent describes a controller with a touchscreen display where the analog control sticks are embedded into it — the display takes up most of the surface of the controller, with holes cut out in the display to allow for the control sticks.

The patent images show an oval controller with two analog control sticks, and buttons at the top and on the other side of the controller. Another image shows virtual buttons appearing next to the control sticks on the display (see images below).

While the Wii U GamePad was innovative with its touchscreen, it was rarely used to its full potential, with few developers opting to take full advantage of it. It’ll be interesting (and very risky) if Nintendo went with a similar design principle for the NX.

However, patent applications aren’t always realized into a final consumer product, so we’ll just have to wait and see what happens with the NX and its controller.

Regarding the console itself, we’ve heard rumors that the NX was very powerful — more powerful than the PS4 and Xbox One.
