Why doesn’t Nintendo release games in the summer?

Ever wondered why summer seems to have such a long gaming drought, despite it being the perfect time for many people to engage in gaming? According to Nintendo of America’s Charlie Scibetta, it’s because gamers just don’t buy games during the summer.

We do the bulk of our business in the holiday season, probably about 60% in October, November, and December.

It’s not just Nintendo that front loads the holiday season, though. All major publishers including Activision, EA, and Ubisoft know that the best time to sell a game is when people are ready to buy it, which typically happens around the holiday season. Nintendo has followed suit and has not released any major retail games in the months of July and August, with the exception of the Wii Sports Club retail package that was only a compilation made available in 2007.

It sucks for those of us who look forward to new releases frequently, but given the rate at which Nintendo has been generating content for Splatoon, Mario Kart 8, and Super Smash Bros., Nintendo gamers shouldn’t have a lack of anything to play this summer.
