After the success of Pokemon Go and the announcement of a Mario game for smartphones, it’s safe to say that Nintendo is warming up to the idea of releasing their content on mobile platforms that don’t have “DS” in their name.

According to Nintendo’s Shigeru Miyamoto, they are looking into bringing their Amiibo functionality to smartphone as well. Amiibo is currently supported in the Wii U and 3DS, and uses NFC-enabled figures to interact with a game.

Speaking about Amiibo on smartphones, Miyamoto told IGN:

“There’s nothing we can announce today but it’s certainly an area we’re interested in, and today Apple announced some new news about their NFC technology.”

Most smartphones today support NFC, so it would be fairly straightforward to use Amiibo, from a technical standpoint. How it would be integrated with games, that’s another question.
