Nintendo hopes to entice the Mario Kart crowd with Splatoon

Nintendo is betting big on Splatoon. It’s the first new intellectual property from Nintendo on home console since 2002 that features a new genre alongside new characters and new experiences. The company is hoping that those who love the off-the-walls action of Mario Kart will return to the Wii U for Splatoon, which is something entirely new from Nintendo. Of course it’s a shooter and yes, it does have a single-player campaign, but the focus of the game is fun multiplayer, which is the same focus of Mario Kart 8.

Nintendo UK marketing manager Chandra Nair says the same people who found lots of fun in Mario Kart 8 on Wii U last year will likely enjoy the quick matches of Splatoon.

It is a new genre for Nintendo – it’s a shooter – but ultimately Splatoon is what Nintendo does best: multiplayer fun. It feels like a Nintendo game and has all the values that you’ve come to expect. So fans are going to love it.

In fact, Nair and her team will be aggressively promoting the game across the UK, hoping to attract those who want to play online and have fun, rather than frustrating matches. She says even if you’ve held off on getting a Wii U up until now, Splatoon makes the purchase worth it.

If you love Mario Kart, the chances are high that you’ll love Splatoon. Games of this quality and distinction don’t come around very often and we’ll be shouting from the highest rafters for all to hear. If you own a Wii U, you need this game.

Splatoon debuts on May 29 across the globe, but if you’re still not convinced by all of Nintendo’s marketing for the title up until this point, you’ll have another chance to check out the Splatoon Global Testfire demo on May 24. The May 24 date is an encore of the original demo that took place earlier this month.
