While sales of the Wii U console are struggling, Nintendo’s digital strategy is working out swimmingly. Satoru Iwata revealed today that the downloadable game sales for both the Wii U and 3DS surpassed 16 billion yen, which is around $160.9 million USD. That’s more than double the sales of last year. Nintendo’s business is increasingly an online one, as Iwata made mention that 87% of Japanese consumers and 83% of American consumers had taken their 3DS consoles online at some point. The Wii U’s connection rate is 80% worldwide.

To give some reasoning behind the move toward Nintendo Direct presentations, Iwata stated that previous Nintendo Directs reached 600,000 views in a matter of days. According to Iwata, the Nintendo eShop is the most popular way to watch Nintendo Direct, despite the videos being available on other websites like YouTube.
