Nintendo confirms Splatoon will have post-launch DLC support

One of the cornerstones of the modern online game is that developers can continue to support the game throughout the rest of the year after launch by offering DLC packs, skins, weapons, maps, and other customization options for those who are dedicated players. Nintendo has just recently jumped on board the post-launch DLC bandwagon, with Mario Kart 8 and Hyrule Warriors seeing several DLC packs despite those games releasing several months ago. It’s a great way to keep the game fresh for players, which is exactly why Nintendo supporting Splatoon in the same way is very important.

Unlike most game developers, Nintendo likes to keep its DLC plans quiet until after the game has launched and Splatoon is no different. However, producer Hisashi Nogami has confirmed that once the game is available to the general public after its May 29 release, the team is looking forward to supporting the game with plenty of content post-launch.

We can’t go into a lot of detail on that today, but we do have some plans to follow up with content to keep interest in the game post-launch. We on the development team are thinking of the launch as a first step of sorts. We hope to add to that in terms of content, and even to the degree that we’re hoping that this will become a franchise that Nintendo can be proud of.

Obviously the amount of support Splatoon will get will be determined by sales, since the game is a new franchise that Nintendo is gambling on. With the support Nintendo has shown Mario Kart 8 and Hyrule Warriors, it would not be surprising to see Splatoon getting regular DLC as long as players are still interested in the game.
