On this day 30 years ago, Nintendo released the NES in North America. The NES — Nintendo Entertainment System — ushered a new ear in gaming and brought console gaming to the mainstream crowd.
The NES was originally released as the Famicom (Family Computer ) in Japan two years earlier, but the big success came with the redesigned NES when it was released in the US and Canada.
When the NES launched, it was a very novel and expensive system. I had a price tag of $300 — adjusted for inflation, that translates to $800 today. But it did include one game: Super Mario Bros.
Nintendo ended up selling 62 million units of the NES during its lifetime, which spanned some 10 years.
