You can play around with Miitomo before its global release

Nintendo launched its first smartphone app just yesterday, but it’s only available in Japan right now. Miitomo is supposed to be a social app to make communicating with your friends easier and it’s all linked to your My Nintendo account, so every day when you engage in social activities, you earn points on your My Nintendo account.

What I’m about to suggest will only work for Android users and any progress you make in the Japanese version of the app won’t transfer to the global version when it’s finally released, so you’ll have to start fresh. Here’s what you need to do to get started with the Japanese version of Miitomo to explore it.

Enable Unknown Sources on your Android Device

By default, all Android devices ship with the ability to install .apk files from third-party websites, but the option is turned off by default. You’ll need to go into your settings and look under Security for the option that says Unknown Sources – Allow installation of apps from sources other than the Play Store. Make sure this toggle is set to on and then download the .apk from this website on your phone.

From there, you should be able to play around with the app and see what it’s about ahead of the global release.
