With the release date for Super Smash Bros. Wii U finally confirmed, developer Masahiro Sakurai has given us the first look at the Amiibo interface. If you’re familiar with Skylanders or Disney Infinity, you’ll know when it’s time to put the toys on the special pad for those games, there’s a unique interface telling you to do so. Because Amiibo figures use the NFC chip inside the Wii U controller to interface with the game, there’s no special pad.

For the first time ever in the Super Smash Bros. series, you can play with a collection of real-life trophies in the form of amiibo. Simply touch them on this part of the GamePad. This particular screen is dedicated to activating amiibo, but you can also tap your amiibo on the GamePad at the character-selection screen to let that character join the battle.

Once that’s done, you’ll see your character’s trophy will transform into a figure player, which develop on their own according to how you play them. Here’s a look at Marth’s trophy being turned into a figure player after using an Amiibo figure on the Wii U GamePad.
