Mario Kart 8 sold 470k units in the US last month

A few days ago, NPD released sales charts for North America for June. As usual, they didn’t provide any specific sales numbers, and only ranked the best selling games and consoles. According to NPD, Mario Kart 8 was the second best selling game in June across all platforms.

Now we know just how many units Mario Kart 8 sold. Nintendo issued a press release outlining some of its best selling games in June, where it went on the record saying that Mario Kart 8 sold an impressive 470,000 units in June in the US alone, bringing lifetime sales of the game to 885,000 in the US.

Recently, UK hardware sales charts showed the Wii U software sales climbing 480% in June, largely thanks to Mario Kart 8.

Nintendo didn’t release the specific sales numbers for the Wii U, only saying that sales were up 48 percent in the first 6 months of the year. However, a recent analysis put the Wii U sales number in June at 140,000 units.

Mario Kart 8 has been a massive success for Nintendo and a much needed boost for the Wii U console. And it’s not just in the US and Europe that Mario Kart 8 has been a big success: the game sold an impressive 500,000 copies in Japan last month as well.
