Mario Kart 8 Deluxe’s new feature helps disabled gamers

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe on the Switch comes with a new feature that helps disabled gamers play the game. Called “Smart Steering”, it helps gamers by controlling either the throttle/breaking or steering.

This is tremendous help to those who can only use one hand or who have a disability. Such as 4 year-old Molly, who suffered a stroke when she was a baby and lacks the coordination on her right hand.

Which means playing Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is pretty tough, as she can’t properly accelerate in-game. The new features such as Smart Steering and Auto Accelerate help that, as he father pointed out in a Reddit thread.

“Thanks to Mario Kart’s new Auto Drive feature, she can now steer with her left hand and let the game drive for her or vice versa.” he wrote.

It’s great that Nintendo is adding these small accessibility features so that more people can enjoy games and participate. It’s especially important for games like Mario Kart, which are popular among kids.
